CLEANING UP OUR STREETS, ONE PIECE OF RUBBISH AT A TIME

TelferYoung offices across the country finished up early on the 25th of March as we all headed out for our annual ‘Adopt a Street’ event in support of our charity Sustainable Coastlines.

Our Sustainability Ambassadors organised for our teams to make their local area litter-free. We essentially ‘Adopt a Street’ as we make it our duty to care for the space while we are there. Whether it was a street, a bridge, a park or a coastline, we were eager to get out there and prevent rubbish from going into our waterways.

“We love having TelferYoung as a sponsor - while the financial contribution helps us make our programmes a success, what really means a lot to us at Sustainable Coastlines is the way TelferYoung staff have engaged with the cause,” - Helen Adams-Blackburn, Sustainable Coastlines.

PROVIDING A HELPING HAND

154 of our staff members went out into the community and spent an hour picking up litter of all kinds, including empty bottles, food packaging and much more. Strangely enough, we found chairs, construction equipment and even some interesting pottery. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we ended up collecting 2,854 litres of litter, which was significantly more than last year.

We are so proud of our team for getting involved, and each office nominated one person as their MVP of the day. Some people went above and beyond by collecting the most rubbish, hopping into rivers and getting deep in the bushes to go the extra mile to keep the environment clean.

“We all had a great time working together on this, and a really good vibe came from the day. It was also a great opportunity to connect with our local Council who assisted us with the Keep Dunedin Beautiful programme and co-ordinator” - Barbara Coory, Otago Sustainability Ambassador.

GET AMONGST IT

Showing support towards Sustainable Coastlines was the driving force behind wanting to head out to get our hands dirty. We are so proud to sponsor Sustainable Coastlines and be able to actively participate and get involved in the community.

Helen Adams-Blackburn from Sustainable Coastlines praised TelferYoung’s efforts, explaining “the staff are always keen to participate in our events and campaigns and create their own awesome initiatives across their offices. Doing this takes us to the heart of what's important to us at Sustainable Coastlines, which is engaging communities and spreading awareness and education".

We encourage everyone to be more mindful of their own impact, such as their plastic use and waste, and be more aware of their surroundings. The simple act of picking up some litter may seem small, but it has a big impact. Our waterways, wildlife and community will thank you for it. Let’s do our part to keep our streets spotless, coastlines clean and New Zealand beautiful.
